Mosaic ideas are all around us. One of my favorite places to find them is the New York City Subway. The stations are decorated with colorful tile mosaics. Of these, many identify the station’s location or they may be signs that give direction. Most of this style of mosaic was in the subway system when is opened in 1904. When the subways were renovated they kept the mosaic style. Instead of making the subways look the same they used different types of mosaic to identify the locations. NYC is already so exciting. Having a passion for mosaic art makes the subways one more thing to add to a wonderful art rich trip to the big city.
Here are some of my favorites.
Eye in the Chambers Street/World Trade Center subway station complex.
Penguins at the 57th st. subway stop!
Birds at the 81st st. subway stop!
Monkeys in the 86th st subway!
These are but a small example of what you can find in the subways these days. In some of the bigger subways you can find mosaics that are over 100 feet! I have seen mosaics in the subway that are impossible to take pictures of they are so big. The subway has a mix of old ornate tile and new works that are breathtaking. Instead of paying to go to museums you can take in a few subway rides and see just as much impressive art. The detail that can be achieved in mosaics is amazing!

Looking at these gives me so many mosaic ideas! If you remember I talked about house number mosaics here. Subway mosaics gives me more ideas on how to make numbers on your house. Instead of making them numeral, i could spell the number out. I also like the subway style for redoing a bathroom or even doing a large scale mosaic in a foyer or front hall of my house!

I love the mosaic art in the subways! I recognize some of the ones you mentioned.
Your art is beautiful.
Thank you for coming over to my blog. Your son is right. It’s good to visit blogs to bring people to your blog. But I do think you’ll also be blessed by the ongoing interaction you have with folks as you return to their blogs, and they return to yours. It’s a great, great journey. Enjoy the ride.
What a creative website. Thanks for visiting my creativity website and leaving the comment. I also like mosaics and your featured photos are very intriguing.
Hi Andrea, I LOVE this post. I went to college in the Bronx and that’s where my husband landed from Ireland so we have a great love for the city, and as a poor college student I rode the subway a lot. Now we ride it because we love it. Like you, it’s hard to miss some of the beautiful hidden artwork of NYC. Thanks for stopping by the Muse- hope to see you again. Will follow via rss feed.
Thanks everyone! I’m so happy that you stopped by. I will see all of you soon on your blogs.
Hey! I know this is somewhat off topic but I was wondering which blog platform
are you using for this site? I’m getting tired of WordPress because I’ve had problems with hackers and I’m looking at options for another platform. I would be great if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
I am really impressed with your writing skills and also with the layout on your blog.
Is this a paid theme or did you modify it yourself?
Either way keep up the nice quality writing, it is rare to see a nice blog like this one nowadays.
I’m not sure why but this blog is loading very slow for me. Is anyone else having this issue or is it a issue on my end? I’ll check back
later and see if the problem still exists.
Right here is the right webpage for anybody who
would like to understand this topic. You know so much its almost hard
to argue with you (not that I really will need to HaHa).
You definitely put a brand new spin on a subject that has been discussed for ages.
Excellent stuff, just great!
