Mosaic House Numbers

Mosaic House Numbers

As promised in the “My Son Catches Mosaic Fever” post, I am here to give you the proper step by step guide to creating your own mosaic house number. The process of the old “how to” evolving into this “how to” took the past 6 months and the combined efforts of Matt (my best friend and business partner), Nancy (Matt’s sister and close friend) and myself. A big thanks to both of them! we all had a lot of fun. I do have to say Nancy took to mosaic like a fish to water. She is actually become the authority between the 3 of us.

We spent loads of time and money figuring out the best way to produce a beautiful, unique weather resistant mosaic house number. It is our pleasure to share this process with all of you ambitious DIYers. For anyone that wants to leave the hard part to us we offer these custom mosaic house numbers as a service. You can find the option to buy at the bottom of this post. Read the rest of this entry »

My Son Catches Mosaic Fever

My son Leon's first mosaic house number

I am so excited to share with every one that my 33 y/o son has taken an interest in mosaic art! My son Leon and his business partner are the web developers behind Mosaic Ideas.  During the time spent working together, they have both discovered the beauty of mosaic art.  I have mention in the past that I do not use patterns for my mosaics. I was discussing with Leon that I would have to make an exception in order to create a mosaic house number for the front of my home. When Leon heard this he excitedly offered to make one for me. I did not hesitate in accepting his offer. Watching him picking his material reminded me of when he was a little boy doing art projects to be like his mother. I asked if he would be willing to be a guest poster to share his experience with my readers. He agreed and is here to write his first post.

WARNING DO NOT FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS

 Leon:

As my mom mentioned I was exposed to mosaic art while helping her with the development and daily maintenance of this blog. My business partner and I run a company that offers these services. As much as I enjoy spending hours of my day working on the computer it was a nice break to get my hands dirty in the workshop. I started out by researching materials (asking my mom and googling when needed)  that would survive the outdoors. I am going to go through each step in a “how to” type of post. This is just to give you an idea of how i started. DO NOT use this post as a guide. I will do another “how to” on the more refined process in a later post.  Please bare with me this was my first time. Read the rest of this entry »

A Mosaic Christmas Ornament Made Easy

ornament mosaic ideas
Recently, I bought the heart shaped item at dollar store. I thought what a great thing to make an ornament with! There was a saying on it but I disregarded that. It wouldn’t matter anyway because I will be gluing pieces over it. I painted a primer on it using kilza primer. After the primer dried (it did not take long), I painted a thin layer of weldbond on it with a one inch foam brush. I quickly sprinkled red glitter on it and let that dry thoroughly.

Luckily, the heart already had a ribbon on it for hanging. I glued a variety of mosaic pieces on it. Some I left whole and some I cut with a nipper so pieces would fit. After a few hours I proceeded to do above gluing pieces with weldbond glue. The glue can be purchased at most hardware stores. But beware! I happened to need Weldbond and I went to the hardware store to get it. I was told they were out but they had it in the warehouse. They got it for me in the warehouse. When I got home I took it out but they glue had frozen in the warehouse! Ever since then I check the state of the glue before leaving the store. It can save a lot of time and aggravation! Leon's first mosaic house number

art/ärt/
Noun:

  1. The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture,…: “the art of the Renaissance”
  2. Works produced by such skill and imagination.

Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items (often with symbolic significance) in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, and paintings. The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics, whereas disciplines such as anthropology, sociology and psychology analyze its relationship with humans and generations.
Traditionally, the term art was used to refer to any skill or mastery. This conception changed during the Romantic period, when art came to be seen as “a special faculty of the human mind to be classified with religion and science”. Generally, art is made with the intention of stimulating thoughts and emotions.

cre·a·tiv·i·ty/kree-ey-tiv-i-tee/
Noun:

  1. the state or quality of being creative.
  2. the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc.; originality, progressiveness, or imagination: the need for creativity in modern industry; creativity in the performing arts.
  3. the process by which one utilizes creative ability: Extensive reading stimulated his creativity.

Creativity refers to the phenomenon whereby a person creates something new (a product, a solution, a work of art, a novel, a joke, etc.) that has some kind of value. What counts as “new” may be in reference to the individual creator, or to the society or domain within which the novelty occurs. What counts as “valuable” is similarly defined in a variety of ways.
